Choosing Adoption During an Unplanned Pregnancy

By Isabelle Bryan

Holidays can be stressful on their own, but for someone facing an unplanned pregnancy, that anxiety may be magnified tenfold. You may have found yourself pregnant but decided that you cannot keep the baby. Perhaps you feel like you are facing a long and stressful road entirely on your own. But Adoption Choices of Nevada will make sure you have all the help you need, even during the holidays. No matter your situation, we are here to guide you through the adoption process and keep you safe and healthy.

Discovering an Unplanned Pregnancy

Upon discovering an unplanned pregnancy, you may be unsure of what actions you want to take. Give us a call. Even if you don’t decide on adoption, our counselors can help ensure you make the best decision for you. But for those who have decided to place their baby for adoption in Nevada, we are always here to help. Our three Nevada offices are available for both virtual and in-person meetings, depending on your needs. For those who need a more immediate response, you can call, text, or email us at any time.

An unplanned pregnancy can be a source of great joy, but it can also be the cause of great stress. You may feel afraid or overwhelmed. Maybe you even feel angry about the impact of a pregnancy on your career or life plans. If you’re lacking a support system, you might feel alone and even more unprepared than you may have been otherwise. Give yourself time to feel these emotions, but don’t force yourself to work through all of them on your own.

Steps for a Successful Adoption Process

At times, determining how to put your child up for adoption may seem overwhelming. But with the help of our adoption agencies, you don’t have to go through it alone. Here are some of our steps for a successful adoption:

  • The first step in any adoption plan is to call us. Even if you don’t choose adoption, we want you to be as informed in your choices as possible.
  • For those who choose adoption, you’ll begin talking to one of our counselors. We help you to find and get any help you need.
  • After the birth, we can continue to provide assistance in multiple ways, including helping you communicate with the adoptive family.

The holiday season changes none of this. Our support doesn’t stop at any time of the year. You never have to worry about being left on your own. It may seem like things will get more difficult – sticking to your birth plan, adoptive parents traveling, etc. But they don’t necessarily have to. Good planning can go a long way. Keep in contact with the birth parents and consider talking to one of our counselors if you begin feeling overwhelmed.

Making an Adoption Plan

Creating an adoption plan can seem daunting, but it’s an important part of the adoption process. This is when you’ll choose not only the adoptive family but the type of adoption you want. If you have any specific criteria – single parents, religion, location – now is the time to decide. Additionally, you’ll have to decide whether you’re looking for an open, semi-open, or closed adoption. To do this, you’ll need to consider how much contact you want with your child and the adoptive family.

Also, consider your birth plan. We at Adoption Choices of Nevada can help you inform yourself of all your options and determine your desires. Your safety and well-being are important, and that includes making sure your needs are met during the birth. Creating a birth plan allows you to make the choices that are right for you. Choosing a hospital and deciding who will be present during the birth are among the things you’ll need to decide.

Getting Support Through Your Adoption Agency

Support is important during and after your pregnant adoption. Having a circle of family, friends, and/or professional counselors can be invaluable. But we also know that not everyone has that luxury. And we’re here to help. Our experienced counselors can help you come to terms with your emotions throughout and after your pregnancy. Additionally, our birth parent support group is open to you for as long as you choose to attend.

The adoptive family may also end up as a source of support. Should you choose a semi-open or open adoption, you may continue to stay in contact with them. For those who have close friends or family members, consider seeking them out. Professional counseling and support groups are helpful, but so is the assistance of the people who love you.

Making Time for Self-Care During the Adoption Process

Getting social support isn’t the only way to look after yourself during pregnancy. Cultivating healthy habits is also important to your overall well-being.

It may seem contradictory, but resting and staying active are both beneficial during pregnancy. Above all, make sure not to strain yourself. Yoga and swimming may both be safe and helpful exercises to engage in during pregnancy. Additionally, walking can provide both exercise and the benefits that come from being outdoors. Finding classes specifically for pregnant women may also be beneficial.

Take the time to consider your eating habits and make healthy choices. A balanced diet during pregnancy includes lots of water, healthy fats and/or low-fat foods, proteins, and vitamin-rich foods. Caffeine and alcohol are no-gos, but you can substitute with decaf and mocktails.

Receiving Financial Aid During Your Nevada Adoption

Choosing adoption in Nevada may come with several forms of financial assistance over the course of your pregnancy and recovery. All eligible birth mothers can get help to create a budget to pay for things including:

  • Rent
  • Food and basic hygiene products
  • Maternity clothes
  • Legal fees

Additionally, we can help you in finding medical care and offer transport to appointments. We can also get you to other appointments, including meetings related to Medicaid and SNAP. Your well-being is important to us, and that means making sure you are healthy, clothed, fed, and housed.

Our support doesn’t come with a price tag attached. All of our services are free, so you never have to worry about not being able to afford adoption. We want you to be able to make the choice that is best for you.
