How to Place Your Baby for Adoption during COVID-19

How to Place Your Baby for Adoption during COVID-19

With state-wide lockdowns and the seemingly endless unpredictability that COVID-19 brings, it can be difficult to maintain courage. Add an unplanned pregnancy to the mix, and that anxiety is heightened. Unplanned pregnancies can be scary and daunting, but Adoption Choices of Nevada, Adoption Choices of Las Vegas, and Adoption Choices of Reno is here to help every step of the way.

Whether you do not have the finances to raise a child, you would like to work toward other goals right now, or you simply do not want to be a parent, you are entitled to explore all of your options.

Despite social distancing guidelines, there are a variety of ways to get in touch with someone regarding the process of placing your baby for adoption. These can include video conferences, phone calls or even emails. We even offer the option to be contacted via text! As a local, private, non-profit adoption agency specializing in newborn and infant adoptions licensed by the state of Nevada, we have been aiding birth parents, adoptive parents, and children for over 18 years. Even if you are from a different state, we are happy to offer applicable resources to you.

So, what’s the first step in placing your baby for adoption?

Contact an Adoption Agency

Most agencies are flexible and offer a wide variety of ways to work with you. Adoption Choices of Las Vegas Social Worker Amanda Travers provided some helpful information on how we’re accommodating birth mothers during this pandemic. For example, meetings can occur virtually or in person with proper safety precautions in place (wearing gloves, masks, etc.). Interactions can occur at the location and the pace of the birth mother’s choice – whatever option is most comfortable.

What happens upon meeting with the adoption agency?

This meeting essentially goes in the direction of the birth mother’s choosing. All options and next steps are discussed with an adoption counselor or social worker. They will help you work through your emotions and set up a plan that works best for you. You have many options and should not feel pressured.

Although it may seem like everything is changing and we are in confusing times right now, COVID-19 has only affected the process of adoption in a few ways. In an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus and protect citizens, certain measures are put in place in medical settings.

How is the adoption process different during this pandemic?

At birth, adoptive parents are NOT allowed in the hospital. The birth mother is allowed only one person in the room. Adoptive parents are not allowed at all. Birth mothers must wait at least 72 hours before signing the adoption papers.

Most other places, protective gear is strongly encouraged. Not only will hospital staff be in face masks, gloves, possibly face shields and other gear, but you will also find patients and their families in similar equipment.

Other than that, adoption agencies are continuing to make this process as seamless as possible.

Adoption during COVID-19

This period of uncertainty can make you feel helpless and it can be hard to maintain hope. Just remember, “There are two different kinds of strength. There’s the strength to make a parenting plan and then there’s the strength to give that plan to another.”
