Journeying through Your Gestational Surrogacy during COVID-19

Well, it has been six — almost seven — long months since COVID-19 “graced” the world with its horrible presence. Some of us are still working from home and avoiding groups of people at all costs. Some of us are still working out in the world and trying to be as safe as possible.

We last covered this topic close to the beginning of the pandemic in this post. When it was written, we were still extremely in the dark as to how the virus works, whether it impacts pregnant women or not, etc.

We will tell you…there is a bit of “good news, bad news” here. Good news: with time, even in the last six months, we have come to learn a bit more about gestational surrogacy during COVID-19. Bad news: Even with six more months of research, COVID is still a bit of a mystery when it comes to how it affects pregnancy and gestational surrogacy.

That said, it’s easy to feel stressed and confused. With safety protocols still in place, and everything still up in the air, it’s hard to gauge where you can start — or if you should at all.

Not to worry; Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Nevada will be taking you through the (slightly) modified world of gestational surrogacy during COVID-19.

Are there any updates?

Unfortunately, this one falls under the “bad news” category. As aforementioned, in our first article, we said that there was little to no idea as to what impact COVID-19 has exactly on fertility. We’re sorry to say that there doesn’t seem to have been much in the way of an update. We understand that this is more than a little disappointing…especially for those who have been waiting anxiously to get started on  their own gestational surrogacy journey. It’s natural for intended parents and gestational carriers to feel antsy and want to get the show on the road. Rightfully so.

For the gestational carriers who are already pregnant, you may be at a higher risk to viral infections. (Scary, we know.) However, you can take comfort in the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any increased risk of contracting the dreaded coronavirus specifically due to your pregnancy. Nor does it seem to affect any future attempts to become pregnant.

It does not appear that the fundamental basics as far as self-care has changed too terribly much in the last few months. Wash your hands, practice social distancing, etc. The CDC recommends that you wash your hands after handling dirty laundry, eating/preparing food, touching surfaces outside your home or items from outside that you have brought into your home.  As far as we can tell, though, it is very unlikely that virus transmissions from gestational carriers to the child they carry. So, as long as you keep yourself healthy and safe, your baby will be too.

Is now a good time to begin the gestational surrogacy journey?

Now, you may still be debating whether it’s even worth pursuing gestational surrogacy during COVID-19. Totally reasonable, if you ask us! As the news networks and social media sites continue to tell us, this is an extremely unprecedented time.

As for whether you should pursue your own journey? We don’t see any reason for you to place your dreams of parenthood on hold, whether you’re wanting to become a gestational carrier for someone, or you’re a hopeful intended parent. Safety precautions are in place to ensure your health, safety and happiness throughout your gestational journey. Ultimately, though, the choice is up to you. If your comfort level is pushing for you to wait it out, you’ll find you may stress much less about it if you take care of you first.

How can I get started?

Happily, this is something that falls neatly into the “good news” side of things. Although there are still safety precautions in any (if not all) medical facilities around the country, they aren’t quite as strict as they were six months ago. Where some offices were completely closed at first, they’re now open with strict procedures in place.

That said, you’ll have to get in contact with the surrogacy agency of your choice to find out what your first steps should be. In the case of Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Nevada, we are happy to chat with you via:

  • FaceTime
  • Phone call
  • Email
  • Skype

We are still open and fully functional. Just as it was in March, we will not be closing our doors at any point during this time. Feel free to get in contact with us if you’re ready to get started!

Gestational Surrogacy during a Pandemic

It is easy to feel ill at ease during this time, and maybe even a little bit discouraged. Try to keep your head up high, however. Just because the coronavirus boogeyman is still looming doesn’t mean that you should put your dreams on hold, as we said earlier.
