Self-Care Tips for Nevada Birth Mothers

By Sylvie Christen

As you might have heard, this Sunday, May 14, is Mother’s Day. While this holiday is filled with flower bouquets, thoughtful cards, and celebrations, it can also be a challenging time. Mothers who have placed a child for adoption are not acknowledged in the traditional sense on this holiday. The season can be a reminder of your sacrifice and the difficult decisions you have made.

This May, we are offering five tips to help you decompress and take care of your mind and body. With these, you can take a step back and remember the gift you have given while looking forward to the future.

If you need adoption help now, please contact Adoption Choices of Nevada. We are a private agency licensed by the state, dedicated to providing women like you with the support they need. Our staff can guide you through the Reno adoption process, create a plan for your baby, and more.

Tip #1: Talk About Your Adoption Journey and How You are Feeling

You don’t need to be told that bottling up your feelings isn’t healthy. Making the step of speaking to a counselor or therapist can feel intimidating if you are not used to it. Fortunately, there are smaller steps you can take toward understanding and nurturing your emotional health.

  • Let your loved ones know this month is a difficult time for you
  • Reach out to family and friends you haven’t spoken to in a while
  • Let it out: try writing down your feelings, thoughts, and goals
  • Consider speaking to a counselor who specializes in the adoption community

Tip #2: Find Adoption Support

As a birth mother, it can be easy to feel that you are alone. Of course, this is not the case, and there are thousands of women and parents across the country who have made adoption plans.

Discovering a community of women with similar experiences can be a great way to take care of your mental health. Your local adoption agency has resources for birth mothers, including access to counseling and support groups. These are available no matter where you are in the adoption process. Check out Adoption Choices of Nevada to learn more!

  • Find a local support group for birth parents
  • Send a thoughtful text to other women you know who have made adoption plans
  • Learn about National Birth Mother’s Day: Saturday, May 13, 2023

Tip #3: As a Birth Mother, Remember to Take Time for Yourself

Use this day however you want to use it. Step away from work, school, and other responsibilities. In this chaotic time, letting go of your obligations can be especially difficult. Remind yourself that this is your day, and you deserve a break.

  • Visit a spa or salon, or recreate one at home
  • Have a movie night with your favorite snack
  • Consider stepping away from social media
  • Take time for your favorite activity, no matter how simple or small

Tip #4: Take Care of Your Body

This advice may seem basic, but it shouldn’t be ignored. Paying attention to your body’s needs is a simple step towards overall health.

  • Get some sunshine by going on a morning walk
  • Cook yourself a healthy meal, or order in
  • Rest! A good night’s sleep can go a long way
  • Stay hydrated, especially if spending time outdoors

Tip #5: Reflect on Your Adoption Journey

Finally, consider your unique position as a birth mother. Think about the strength you have exhibited throughout the adoption process.

If you have chosen an open or semi-open adoption, Mother’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the adoptive family. Send a photo or video, or think about setting up a virtual meeting. Contact an adoption specialist at Adoption Choices of Nevada for more information and advice on reaching out to the adoptive family.
